Our History
CARRIE WOOSTER TINGLEY was a bright, capable woman with a big heart and an ongoing desire to help the poor, the sick, and the afflicted. In 1910 Carrie and Clyde Tingley moved from Ohio to Albuquerque, with the hope that New Mexico's climate would help Carrie, who was a tuberculosis patient.
The Tingleys lived a modest life, but they still spent much of their time helping and comforting the sick, and ensuring that disabled children had access to medical care and rehabilitation. When Clyde became Governor, the Tingleys were able to accomplish even more. On Saturday, May 29, 1937, in Hot Springs, New Mexico, they dedicated a hospital for children with polio.
In 1963, Friends of the Carrie Tingley Hospital founded the Carrie Tingley Hospital Foundation, and for more than forty years, the Foundation has raised funds, providing support to both the hospital and directly to the patients and their families.
Carrie Tingley Hospital Foundation has been blessed by many supporters and volunteer leaders over the decades. A founding member of the Foundation, Mrs. Alice King served as our Board President from 1988-1991. The Carrie Tingley Hospital Foundation is honored that Mrs. King lent her name to our organization’s planned giving program: the Alice King Society.
