MUTHU BARRY JUNIOR WHEELCHAIR SPORTS CAMP

AABL The Muthu Barry Junior Wheelchair Sports Camp is held in June every summer in Albuquerque.

Since 1992, when the junior division of the wheelchair sports movement was created, every region across the country was required to provide sanctioned competition for junior athletes, allowing opportunities to qualify for national competition. Wheelchair sports summer camps were established to prepare the wheelchair athletes for participation in the sports competitions.

We are looking forward to another successful camp this summer during the week of June 8-12, 2009! The camp will be a day camp and will be held at Valley High School in Albuquerque, NM.

In 1999 the Junior National Wheelchair Championships took place in Albuquerque. One young woman from New Mexico, Muthu Barry (a Valley High School student) participated. Our camp honors her memory and her desire to compete in sports. We are hoping to contribute to the expansion of the existing youth wheelchair sports structure in New Mexico and lay the groundwork for national participation by our local athletes.

The Carrie Tingley Hospital Foundation, through the Arts and Athletics Beyond Limits (AABL) Program, has graciously supported the sports camp and other programs in the AABL family. The money raised through events such as Mudd Volleyball and the Raspberry Home Tour directly benefit our athletes. The AABL Program is dedicated to offering youth with physical disabilities the opportunities they need to be successful in competing on both a local and the national level in their chosen sports. We look forward to expanding the program even further in the future!

Campers will receive structured instruction in archery, tennis, track and field, martial arts, indoor soccer, table-tennis, softball, hand-cycling and weight-lifting. Some free time will be allotted to open-gym time, possibly hockey, rugby, football and social activities. We will also have a couple of evening activities for the campers and their families/friends during the week of the camp. Campers who are between the ages of 8-18 and who have physical disabilities will participate, including youth who use manual or power wheelchairs. Campers will need to have the ability to follow directions, get from one location to another independently and communicate their needs with camp staff. Youth who are ambulatory but would need a wheelchair to participate in competitions are also encouraged to attend the camp.

Our team of adult instructors will keep the campers challenged and energized. We are in need of volunteers (ages 14 and up) to help with specific sport instruction, organization of the camp, and general assistance of the campers, including attending to personal needs. We will have 2 nurses on site daily to help with the self-care needs of the campers as well as to administer medications and first-aid.
